Born in Hong Kong, the youngest of 10 siblings, his father was a tailor for actor William Holden.
After studying at the University of Leeds in the UK, he returned to Hong Kong and won second place in the ATV Asian Music Contest in 1976. This led him to become active in stage, TV, and youth-oriented films, and he broke through with an important role in John Woo's "A Better Tomorrow" (86).
After that, he appeared in the masterpieces of Hong Kong film masters such as Tsui Hark's "A Chinese Ghost Story" (87), Chen Kaige's "Farewell My Concubine" (93), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival, and Wong Kar-wai's "Happy Together" (97). He moved to Canada in 1992 but soon returned to Hong Kong, and by purchasing real estate and opening a cafe, he made an impression that he would remain in Hong Kong even after the handover in 1997.
Died on April 1, 2003 (at the age of 46)
